Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View books series is coming back

Even after 40 years, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back leaves us with more questions than answers. What was Willrow Hood carrying in that ice-cream container? How did the tactful General Veers prepare for the Battle of Hoth? Are all those bounty hunters best buddies? When was that Exogorth’s last dental appointment?

Fret no longer, Star Wars fans, because Penguin Random House has finally put together a team of 40 authors to shine a light on many of your favorite mystery characters from the saga’s fan-favorite film.

Coming November 10, From A Certain Point Of View: The Empire Strikes Back will retell the events of Empire through the eyes of 40 different background characters, including “heroes, villains, droids and creatures.” This celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary comes off the heels of A New Hope’s installment in 2017, which brought us inside the minds of many fan-favorite tertiary characters, such as the Jawas and a mouse droid.

Whether it’s a giant space worm or an eerie Dagobah cave full of the most peculiar creatures, Star Wars is at its best when it gets weird. According to one Del Rey editor, this upcoming book certainly doesn’t shy away from that.

When it gets weird, the possibilities are endless.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the From A Certain Point Of View series is its conscious effort to bring new and diverse authors into the Star Wars galaxy. So far, Empire isn’t holding back. With just over 30 authors confirmed via #FromACertainPOVStrikesBack on Twitter, newcomers include Adam Christopher, Austin Walker, Brittany Williams, Catherynne Valente, Django Wexler, Emily Skrutskie, Hank Green, and Mike Chen.

Many are returning from the 2017’s From A Certain Point Of View as well, including Beth Revis, Christie Golden, E.K. Johnston, Daniel José Older, Delilah Dawson, Gary Whitta, Jason Fry, John Jackson Miller, Tom Angleberger, and Zoraida Córdova.

Del Rey Books will announce the full author list on Monday June 15. In the meantime, check out the following thread for further updates.

As if the announcement itself weren’t exciting enough, it’s all happening for a charitable cause. Each writer will be forgoing their compensation and donating to the non-profit organization First Book, which provides educational resources to children in need. In addition, Penguin Random House is adding a $100,000 donation alongside 100,000 books from Disney/Lucasfilm. Together, the donation is valued at over $1,000,000.

Despite our own world being in its most desperate hour, Star Wars publishing is helping to show there’s still some hope to hold onto. Luminous beings, indeed.
