Star Wars character No. 4: Captain Phasma

When images of Captain Phasma were first released as the promotional train for The Force Awakens revved up, fans were extremely intrigued. She was a stormtrooper that was decked out in chrome armor from head to toe. Not only that but she had a cool black cape slung over one shoulder and had a pike she carried around.

We learned she was going to be voiced by Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie and fans had high hopes for the character. Turns out, she was the next Boba Fett, a cool character who was used sparingly that came to a quick end. Phasma had only a few scenes in The Force Awakens and was apparently killed when Starkiller Base was destroyed.

She survived that ordeal and returned in The Last Jedi. Again, she didn’t have a huge role, and eventually met her demise at the hands of Finn, Rose, and BB-8. This was another case of a Star Wars character who was cool looking but ultimately was disappointing due to the small size of her role.

Phasma’s backstory that was primarily fleshed out in comic form, made her a much more interesting character. In fact, she could very well be the most treacherous character in the entire saga. First of all, she betrayed her family and her brother to join forces with the First Order, which at that time was led by Hux’s father. She later betrayed him to join forces with Hux. She also blamed the shutdown of Starkiller base’s shields on a fellow officer and had him killed.

Phasma is clearly a self-serving type of person who is quick to stab someone in the back. She only seems loyal to the First Order itself, and this is something we never would’ve found out about her in the films, and knowing all this makes her a more complex and complete character.
