Fleshed out multiplayer

What should be clear is that the game will be primarily multiplayer focused. The lack of modes from the beginning, however, is something of a surprise. Dogfights are a standard 5 vs 5 affair, while Fleet Battles is an objective-based, multi-staged offering. Outside of that, however, you’re stuck.

There’s a little more by the way of actual maps. The six locations confirmed so far (Yavin Prime, Esseles, Nadiri Dockyards, Sissubo, Galitan, and Zavian Abyss) offer a bit of variety (or as much as you can in outer space).

There is a possibility that Motive Studios are holding back some information, possibly for the now cancelled Star Wars Celebration, in regards to some of the multiplayer options. Regardless, the lack of options announced thus far is a little concerning.

Be it pre-release, or with support in the months following its release, we’d like to see those options expand. In the same way Battlefront II was constantly improved with a slew of map and mode updates, we’d like to see Squadrons given the same treatment. While Battlefront II had the benefit of drawing inspiration from all eras of the film canon, Squadrons will be set in the immediate aftermath of Return of the Jedi.

While Squadrons wouldn’t have the capacity to add iconic space battles from the existing saga (although that would be fantastic), there’s enough from the wider, written canon, that could be added down the line. Moments from Aftermath and Alphabet Squadron would be perfect (I know we saw it in Battlefront II, but I’m always open to depictions of The Battle of Jakku), to both diversify the sort of modes we could see, and the amount of maps we can play them on.
