Count Dooku’s Solar Sailer

Dooku’s ship is one of the most misleading ships in all of Star Wars. At the end of Attack of the Clones, he battles to a standstill with Yoda. Dooku then runs to this tiny looking ship and flies away. Despite Padme and the clones’ best efforts to shoot him down, he ascends higher into the sky and eventually into the atmosphere. The camera follows him out into space and then we see this little ship has much more to it than we initially believed.

With a flip of a switch, Dooku releases two front sails that open up and extend way out in front of the cockpit and it’s very reminiscent of a pod racer. The ship then takes off on it’s way to Courscant. The sails are a simplistic touch, but also add a look of elegance that fits the personality of a distinguished extremist like Count Dooku.

The idea of a sail based ship in Star Wars was an inspired idea. Previously in Star Wars, all we’ve seen are ships that are powered by hyperdrives. To see a ship with an old fashioned concept of a sail that picks up solar winds was a fantastic addition to the Star Wars galaxy. This would be a great thing to have in the event of a hyperdrive failure like the Millennium Falcon suffered in the original trilogy.
