Disney+ announces LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special

It looks like Star Wars fans will get to celebrate Life Day in the galaxy far far away once again.

LEGO Star Wars: The Holiday Special will be premiering on Disney+ on Nov. 17, 2020. The date coincides with the anniversary of the original and widely panned Star Wars Holiday Special that premiered on the same date back in 1978. The announcement was first published Thursday on StarWars.com and across the franchise’s various social media pages.

Instead of a live-action presentation, this edition of the Star Wars Holiday Special will be fully animated and will take place in a sort of LEGO Star Wars “cinematic universe.” According to the announcement, the plot will revolve around Rey preparing to celebrate Life Day with familiar faces like Poe, Finn, Chewbacca and Rose Tico.

The special will also see Rey meet other fan-favorite characters from across the Star Wars timeline which is sure to cause some holiday hilarity.

One interesting detail about the plot is that it is set shortly after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. So, this will be one of the first glimpses fans will get into the galaxy far far away in a post-Skywalker saga timeline.

As to whether this special will be canon or not is still to be decided. If it is, it would be pretty funny for the newest era of Star Wars to be introduced in the form of LEGOs. After all, Star Wars has always been for the young and those young at heart. This year’s holiday special will be sure to have something for all fans no matter what era of Star Wars they grew up with.

In all honesty, The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special should be a nice ease into a new era of Star Wars. After the divisive reception of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, a lighthearted celebration of Life Day might be just what the fan base needs to see eye to eye again.
