Jon Favreau, Pedro Pascal and more are teasing The Mandalorian season 2.
Still no trailer yet, but there are (finally) new details about The Mandalorian season 2 being teased from its cast and creators. Today, Entertainment Weekly released a feature on the Disney+ television show, and it’s giving us just enough info to hang onto until Oct. 30 when the episodes begin streaming.
When we last left the Mandalorian bounty hunter, he had just faced off against Moff Gideon and was determined to help find little Baby Yoda his home. What happens next on their adventure to find out what The Child is and where he comes from? Showrunner Jon Favreau is teasing that we’ll be getting a lot more than just Baby Yoda and the Mandalorian this season.
Here’s what Favreau had to say about season 2 in the Entertainment Weekly feature:
"The new season is about introducing a larger story in the world. The stories become less isolated, yet each episode has its own flavor, and hopefully we’re bringing a lot more scope to the show."
Season 1 did a particularly good job of having episodes that felt unique enough to be standalones but also tie together the thread of the entire story arc. And it looks like season 2 will be doing even more of that. This, of course, seems to be the winning formula for The Mandalorian as well. Paired with episodes that release weekly compared to the “all at once” model like Netflix, it helps the Disney+ show to keep a steady stream of excitement week by week.
Speaking on his character, lead Pedro Pascal also teased what to expect in the second season. According to him, they’ll be looking for ways to “push the envelope” when it comes to the adventures and situations that Mando will find himself in. Of course, we’ve seen that Mando has an unwavering faith when it comes to protecting the Child. So we don’t doubt that he’ll continue to go above and beyond to keep the little one safe.
And that includes being safe from villains like Moff Gideon, except actor Giancarlo Esposito is teasing on his end that there may be times where he and Mando join forces together.
“Maybe there’s an opportunity to get him to fight some battles for me,” Esposito said in the interview. “You may think I’m a villain, but I’m trying to harness some energy and some powers for a path that could be best for all. You’ll get to see him be somewhat diplomatic and more of a manipulator.”
Seeing as Mando doesn’t necessarily subscribe to the ideas of the Force and the Light and Dark Side, his moral compass doesn’t need to be dictated by the ideas of good versus evil. In this way, he may legitimately find good a reason to team up with Gideon — probably all in the name of saving the Child, even if the missions and battles are extremely dangerous.
Surprisingly enough, the feature revealed a reason why we should all be extremely lucky that The Mandalorian season 2 will be heading to Disney+ right on time. While many television and movie productions had to shut down following COVID-19 restrictions, The Mandalorian team was able to wrap up filming four days before shutdowns began. (Favreau revealed the biggest challenge with that was completing the score, but they eventually found a way.)
So, now all there is to do is wait until Oct. 30 when The Mandalorian begins streaming again. And (in the meantime) we hope this news means a trailer will be out soon.
