Baby Yoda has become a huge star in his own right thanks to The Mandalorian. He was apparently the biggest thing on set during production of the second season.
Nothing beats Baby Yoda and probably never will. The tiny green dude was such a surprise when he made his debut at the end of The Mandalorian season 1’s first episode. He was such a closely guarded secret that it’s hard to believe the information didn’t leak before the series debuted. Anyway, enough gushing. With the sophomore season almost upon us, Entertainment Weekly has made the show its cover story with a first look at what is to come including our favorite little guy.
Since Baby Yoda is our talking point, let’s dive into how he was a big deal on set, even if he was just a puppet.
Recap: Behind-the-scenes of season 1
During production on the freshman season of The Mandalorian, the crew wasn’t exactly sure if the Baby Yoda puppet was going to work. According to Dave Filoni, the 16-inch puppet wasn’t as much as a big deal as he is in season 2 (more on that in a moment). He mentioned in the EW article that they didn’t think he would be used too much but it ended up being used more than they originally thought.

A while ago, Bryce Dallas Howard, who directed the fourth episode entitled “Chapter 4: Sanctuary,” said her kids were on set during her time on set. In an MSN video reposted from Entertainment Weekly back in March, she said she was utterly terrified her children would leak secrets from the set including the existence of Baby Yoda. She said that “Baby,” as she called him, was the star.
She even told her kids and the kids in the episode she directed that they could not talk about Baby Yoda to anyone.
Going Forward: Baby Yoda became the biggest thing on the season 2 set
Entertainment Weekly’s chat with Filoni revealed that there was a “total shift” around Baby Yoda given his rise in popularity. It was stated in the conversation that the cutie who is dubbed in the show as The Child became a staple on set because of how adorable he is.
This was said by Giancarlo Esposito who plays Moff Gideon who said the following:
"Even as a puppet, you can’t walk by the Child without having an interaction, because it’s so very sweet and innocent."
He’s certainly not wrong. Seeing that little face would make anyone swoon. We’re just happy that Baby Yoda has become a celebrity in his own right. We cannot wait to see what he gets up to with Mando during season 2.
