As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 related uncertainties, the upcoming Cassian Andor series has been forced to make a change in director.
The Disney+’s Cassian Andor series has received a change of director, following the stepping down of Tony Gilroy. Toby Haynes, of Black Mirror fame, has signed on to direct the first three episodes of the upcoming series, per a Deadline report. Gilroy will remain close to the project, serving as the series’ showrunner and executive producer.
Haynes’ addition is purely a logistical decision. Filming of the series is due to take place in the UK, which would require New York-based Gilroy to both travel to the UK and undergo a period of self-isolation. It was decided, by all parties, to be the best thing to avoid disruption in the production of the series.
Working experience in the genre
The UK-based Haynes is most notable for his Black Mirror directorial effort, “U.S.S. Callister.” His career also covers three episodes of Doctor Who, Sherlock, as well as the Channel 4/HBO joint production of Brexit: An Uncivil War. Haynes’ previous work within the science fiction genre, as well as the critical acclaim garnered by those projects, should bode well for the series. The hire could prove to be a major coup in ensuring its success.
While the Cassian Andor series still hasn’t an official release date as of yet, it is still expected to release in 2021. With The Mandalorian, now considered an award-winning series, and the greatly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series on the horizon, Disney+ has, very quickly, become the definitive home of Star Wars.
All in all, it looks like the upcoming series will be in good hands, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.
The Cassian Andor series is scheduled for a 2021 release, while The Mandalorian season 2 will premiere on Oct. 30. What are your thoughts on the change? Let us know below!
