9 of the most-wasted Star Wars characters as picked from each movie
By Nik Edlund
9. Episode IX: Rose Tico
Whether you like Rose Tico or not, the fact she was introduced as a major new character on the side of good in The Last Jedi and then basically pushed to the side like Brussel sprouts on a dinner plate in The Rise of Skywalker was a disservice to her character.
Rose gets basically nothing to do in The Rise of Skywalker. Instead of joining the crew on their mission to help Rey find and confront Palpatine, she opts to stay back and work on some radar or something lame. She basically was the Lando of the sequel trilogy and should’ve played a much bigger role in the final film the same way that old pirate did.
It would’ve made plenty of sense for Rose to join the group as she clearly would’ve become a major player in the Resistance a year following the events of The Last Jedi and formed close ties with the other leaders, Rey, Finn and Poe. For her to be on that mission would’ve been a natural progression and the relationship between her and Finn that was started in the previous movie could’ve been explored further.
Rose was a character who through the sacrifice of her sister became fully committed to the cause of the Resistance and should’ve played a much bigger role in the final fight for freedom. She should’ve been on a ship with Finn fighting but instead was replaced by Jannah. This switch is a great example of the overall problem of the sequel trilogy and that is a lack of an overall story and allowing each director to take the movies wherever they wanted to. J.J. Abrams should’ve used Rose as a major protagonist but instead used his own character that we are introduced to in the last film in her role as the last part of the foursome.
