7. Episode VII: Maz Kanata

Maz Kanata was a great character who was introduced to us in The Force Awakens. She was Force-sensitive but elected not to follow the way of the Jedi, and instead opened up her castle to be a neutral place where both Resistance, First Order, and anyone else in between could hang out have a drink, and chill.

Despite not being a Jedi she was a bit of a mentor-type to Rey and for reasons unknown was the holder of Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber. She also had a major crush on Chewbacca and was over 1,000 years old. And despite all these interesting features and facts, we only get to see Maz for a handful of scenes. She gives Rey the lightsaber after questioning Han about her and then her castle is attacked by the First Order. After the battle, our heroes leave but Maz apparently does not.

It would’ve made sense for Maz to leave it all behind and fully join the Resistance after the destruction of her castle. She had nothing left at that point and her joining forces with Leia would’ve made a lot of sense. There were shots in an early trailer for The Force Awakens that showed Maz giving Leia the lightsaber so perhaps that was in the plans early. This would’ve given the Resistance a powerful ally who had plenty of ties around the galaxy that she could call on.

Instead, we barely see Maz throughout the remainder of the sequel trilogy, with just a cameo in The Last Jedi, and a few shots here and there in The Rise of Skywalker. It’s too bad because Maz could’ve been a much bigger part of this trilogy if things were a little more well thought out.
