Star Wars #7 moves forward while also looking back to a time when Grand Moff Tarkin was still a threat.

Writer Charles Soule has been revolutionizing the landscape of Star Wars storytelling in comics for years now with popular titles such as Darth Vader: Lord of the Sith, Poe Dameron, and The Rise of Kylo Ren. His latest work in Star Wars comics is the franchise’s flagship title, Star Wars, which picks up immediately after the events of The Empire Strikes Back. In the first six issues, we’ve seen Luke coping with the revelation of his father’s true identity, his desperate search for his father’s lightsaber, and his continued pursuit of becoming a Jedi like his father once was. We’ve also seen Leia get frozen in carbonite and lead the Rebellion in a narrow escape from a new Imperial enemy named Commander Zahra.

Return of Tarkin

According to StarWars.com, the upcoming Star Wars #7 explores Commander Zahra’s backstory through flashbacks that include Grand Moff Tarkin. The preview shared by StarWars.com includes the cover by Carlo Pagulayan and four pages of art by Ramon Rosanas. The pages reveal a familiar cold and calculating Tarkin as he ruthlessly pursues the enforcement of order in the Empire, but they also allude to Commander Zahra’s rise through the Imperial ranks. Zahra seems to just as cold and calculating and a worthy successor to Tarkin as a villain against the Rebellion.

Tarkin gives Zahra a mission and alludes to an enemy called the Nihil that was previously mentioned by Soule in an interview. The Nihil will be a villain in the upcoming The High Republic novels, so it’s interesting that their influence will be felt someone in the timeline of the Skywalker Saga.

Star Wars #7 will be available on Oct. 7.
