Watch the trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon starring Kelly Marie Tran!
Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran is on to her next adventure. Following her debut in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, she’s certainly on the up and up — especially with the latest project she’s in.
Not too long ago, it was announced that Tran would be voicing the lead character in Disney’s newest animated film, Raya and the Last Dragon. And now, Disney has just released the trailer for the film today.
This film is unlike any other Disney film yet, and it will among the first of its kind to focus on Southeast Asian culture. In this, Tran plays the lead character, Raya, and it looks like she will be the next big hit among Disney fans. This is the studio that brought us the likes of Moana and Frozen’s Anna and Elsa, after all. So it’s a sure bet that Tran’s character Raya will be the newest beloved Disney character among fans.
Here’s Disney’s official synopsis of the movie, and you can watch the trailer down below.
"Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well."

While this isn’t necessarily the typical Star Wars fare, there’s always a lot of crossover when it comes to Star Wars and Disney fans. Star Wars is under the Disney umbrella, after all, so it’s no wonder Tran was able to have one of her next big acting gigs be with Disney again.
But, as you can see from the trailer, this movie looks like it’s going to be filled with plenty of action and plenty of heart as well. That’s what Star Wars movies are all about, after all. This movie’s just animated!
This is also an exciting comeback for Kelly Marie Tran as well. While the actress has done things outside of Disney and Star Wars, her last major film role in The Rise of Skywalker was nothing short of a disappointment — but it wasn’t her fault. Rose Tico, unfortunately, had a drastically reduced role in the film. And seeing her character be downgraded was quite the surprise. But now, Tran gets to be the lead in a major animated film, so this should hopefully make up for what we saw in Episode IX.
Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon is set to hit theaters in March 2021.
