3. Sarlaac

The Sarlaac is basically a pit out in the middle of the Tatooine desert. This pit originally just had some tentacles and teeth in it and rumors abounded that it would slowly digest its prey over the course of 1,000 years. Jabba the Hut used this Great Pit of Carkoon to get rid of his enemies and let out a hearty belly laugh as he watched them suffer their agonizing deaths.

The monster itself is quite frightening. This fleshy pit of death is perfectly hidden in the sand dunes and could easily score prey that unknowingly walks into its depths. The special editions of the original trilogy added a Little Shop of Horrors’ Audrey II type of aspect to it, making it more of a venus fly trap type of beast rather than just a tooth and tentacled covered hole. Whether it’s plant-like or not, the Sarlaac is one of the great original monsters of Star Wars and well worth the third overall spot on this list.

2. Wampa

The Wampa is the beast Luke Skywalker is nearly eaten by on the ice planet of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s basically the arctic Sasquatch of the Star Wars universe as it is a bipedal beast covered in fur. The difference is the fur of the Wampa is white to blend into its surroundings and the creature also has some impressive looking longhorns protruding from the side of its thick noggin.

The Wampa is an extremely powerful monster with big paws that it uses to knock out its prey. For whatever reason, the beast likes to hang his prey by freezing their feet to the top of its cave before eating. Perhaps this has something to do with getting their blood to all pool towards the head, or maybe it is just a sadistic pleasure of the creature. That is unknown at this point.

What is for certain is that the Wampa is one of the creepiest and terrifying creatures in Star Wars and one that Luke Skywalker was lucky to escape the clutches of.
