12. Anakin on fire

One of the most visually startling images in the Skywalker Saga comes near the end of Revenge of the Sith. Obi-Wan Kenobi travels to Mustafar to face Anakin after learning that Anakin has turned to the Dark Side. The two have one of the most epic lightsaber battles of the entire saga. For a while, it seems the two are evenly matched, and it’s not clear who will win. But then Anakin’s arrogance blinds him, and his arms and legs are sliced off by Obi-Wan’s lightsaber, leaving him writhing on the searing hot ground next to the river of flowing hot lava.

This scene is both emotionally stirring because of Obi-Wan’s confession that Anakin was like a brother to him and disturbing because of Obi-Wan’s willingness to not only let his friend die but to suffer as the flames of Mustafar consume what’s left of his body. We watch as Anakin’s hair is burned away and his eyes turn yellow, and he screams in agony and rage. “I hate you,” he screams to Obi-Wan, and it’s clear that the goodness in Anakin is gone. Obi-Wan leaves him, probably fully expecting him to die, and it’s an image that will forever haunt him as he lives out the rest of his days.
