13. Rey’s Force visions

The Force Awakens introduced us to Rey, a scavenger destined to become one of the most powerful Jedi of all time and finish the work of bringing balance to the Force that the Skywalker family started. But when we first meet her, she doesn’t yet realize her importance. And in a moment that truly terrifies her, she senses Luke’s lightsaber calling out to her from within Maz Kanata’s basement. When she touches it, she’s thrust into a series of startling visions and sounds that she can’t even begin to understand or grasp why they’re happening to her.

She sees Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren and a temple on fire and R2-D2. She hears the haunting breathing of Darth Vader, whom she’s never seen or even known existed. She hears the voices of Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and while we in the audience know these voices, they are as strange and foreign to her as anyone who has never seen a Star Wars movie. Then she sees herself in battle with Kylo Ren and feels the threat he poses to her. And she’s desperate to get out of the vision. When it finally ends, Maz Kanata tells her the lightsaber was calling to her and suggests that her future lies with Luke Skywalker. She’s so creeped out by the vision, however, that she wants nothing to do with the lightsaber and marches away, at least until destiny catches up with her.
