3. I’m not afraid… You will be
Jedi Grand Master Yoda is without question one of the most enigmatic characters in the Star Wars franchise. When we first meet him in The Empire Strikes Back, he seems a little eccentric, pillaging through Luke’s belongings and beating R2-D2 with his walking stick. Of course, we don’t know this is Yoda at first, and we soon realize this was all an act. This little green creature is one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known, and Obi-Wan has sent Luke to him to be trained to be a Jedi.
Yoda isn’t convinced, however. He sees too much fear in Luke and believes Luke to be too old to begin the training. Luke insists that he’s ready and that he won’t fail Yoda. “I’m not afraid,” Luke says. And in a truly spooky moment in the franchise, Yoda’s expression turns deathly serious as he says in a creepy deep voice, “Oh! You will be. You will be.” If he’s not afraid of the challenges of becoming a Jedi, he should at least be afraid of Yoda in this moment because most of the audience is. It’s a grave foreshadowing of the heartache and terror he’s about to face as he embarks not only on a journey to becoming a Jedi but learning the truth about where he comes from.
