Bail Organa was no Jedi but he was a friend to many including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano. So, how did Princess Leia’s adoptive father survive Order 66?

There is no denying that Bail Organa, the adoptive father of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala’s daughter, Leia, survived the slaughtering of the Jedi which was bought about by Sheev Palpatine. He taught the future General of the Resistance how to live but the Viceroy of Alderaan had to outlive the guardians of peace first.

So, how did Senator Bail Organa survive Order 66 and end up raising the future of the Rebel Alliance? Let’s take a look at how he comes to accomplish this without even getting shot at by rogue Clone Troopers.

A background on Bail and his tale of survival

During the Clone Wars, Bail and a group of other senators had grown wary of Palpatine and his power. He had been in office much longer than he was meant to. One of these politicians was Padmé Amidala, who had a semi-personal tie to the chancellor. Her husband, Anakin, was a longtime supporter of the secret Sith Lord because he befriended him when he arrived on Coruscant when he was a child.

Palpatine became like a father to Anakin, and over time, started to corrupt him against everyone he held most dear. Bail, having served in the senate with Padmé, could see something wasn’t right, and they decided to form a secret group known as the Delegation of 2000. These senators gathered together to find a way to unseat the chancellor as they felt he had become too powerful for his own good. However, the plan to overthrow the secret Sith Lord ultimately fell apart before it could begin.

The Chancellor declares the Jedi as traitors, turns Anakin totally to the Dark Side. This prompts the activation of Order 66 which saw the clone troopers turn on their superiors. Bail manages to rescue Jedi Master Yoda from after his duel with Palpatine.

Before this, he tries to enter the Jedi Temple to see what is going on but he is confronted by two clones who aim their blasters at him. A young Jedi Padawan named Zett Jukassa fights off the soldiers but is killed in front of the senator.

Zett’s sacrifice saved Bail

Without Zett jumping in to protect him from the clone troopers, Bail would have been assassinated, and Leia would not have been raised by the Organas and followed the path she had. She may have ended up elsewhere and someplace where the Emperor and Vader would’ve found her.

Bail’s survival was crucial to the founding of the Rebel Alliance and to Leia’s goal of getting justice for those billions of lives that were lost during all the conflicts Palpatine was involved in. Without Viceroy Organa, the Empire wouldn’t have been overthrown by the Rebellion, and Leia may never have reunited with Luke.
