15. James Earl Jones as the Voice of Darth Vader

What would Star Wars be without the voice of James Earl Jones as Darth Vader? Jones himself seems like a nice man, but his deep, booming voice created just the menacing feel George Lucas needed to make Darth Vader truly intimidating. Combined with the sound of Vader’s breathing, Jones’ voice made Darth Vader sound fully in control of any situation. His appearance was terrifying enough, but the voice was the missing ingredient to make Darth Vader the greatest villain of all time.

Jones’ standout performance as Darth Vader, however, isn’t during a moment in which he’s terrorizing someone, but a more intimate moment with his son in Return of the Jedi. When Luke turns himself over to Vader, he pleads with his father to come with him and return to the Light. Jones’ voice replies, “It is too late for me, son.” You can hear the subtle regret in Jones’ voice, the wish that things could be different. This moment foreshadows what Luke believes all along about his father, that there is still good in him, and Jones delivers the line perfectly.
