Giancarlo Esposito once again teases what’s ahead for Moff Gideon
Now that we’ve finally seen his face in season 2, Giancarlo Esposito shared a bit more about Moff Gideon!
It may have taken some time, but Moff Gideon made his much-awaited appearance in season 2 of The Mandalorian. First, through a hologram in episode 3 and then in-person in episode 4, standing tall afront a fleet of what we can confidently call dark troopers.
Moff Gideon hasn’t amounted to much yet, but is bound to become a major focal point in the coming episodes and seasons. As an indication of that, Giancarlo Esposito detailed what’s in store for his character with Entertainment Weekly. While we can temper our expectations for this season, Esposito teased a bold plotline to come.
He first referenced the elephant-in-the-room of the sparsity of his character, calling it “dangling the carrot.” It may be frustrating, but it falls right in line with the show’s storytelling. Esposito said, “Let’s see where The Mandalorian and The Child will go and what their allegiances may be as they flow through that.”
Mando and the Child have some pressing matters in the former’s allegiances and the latter’s need to reunite with his kind. Those drive the story forward, with Gideon’s story intersecting along the way. To that point, Esposito teased, “I think you’re going to see other storylines start to creep in. When we start to realize there’s such a deep connection [between the show’s storylines and] the rest of the galaxy and what’s really happening.”
Perhaps it is just The Child, but there seems to be something even more sinister in his sights. Or maybe not?
"It could be super soldiers. It could be that he wants to save the galaxy … So I always hold out that there may be an altruistic reason that he is taking control or trying to."
In terms of specifics, Esposito is of course light. However, there will be more than just looking ominously and flying TIE fighters ahead based on one of the more telling quotes of the conversation. Perhaps he will put the Dark Saber to work.
"I trained my attitude and I’m a physical actor so I do things to keep my body high and tight, and thank goodness I did, because as you will see in episodes to come I have a certain physicality to exude."
And in case there was any doubt about the dark troopers, Esposito wrapped saying, “there’s going to be a lot of battles and stormtroopers and all the dark troopers – everyone will get involved. We’re all in a fresh new place to bring it home.”
My main takeaway is that The Mandalorian will be more of a marathon than a sprint. Expectations have soared with season 2 due to the ongoing rumors and storylines. However, things will likely unfold over time considering just how many moving parts are involved. If not in season 2, Moff Gideon will undoubtedly play a large part in that, and I can’t wait for it.
