Lucasfilm has revealed Patty Jenkins will direct a new Star Wars movie.
Yet another new Star Wars movie is in the works from Lucasfilm, and a very in-demand director is taking the helm of this project.
Today, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that, yes, there is yet another Star Wars movie in the works. This was announced during the Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation. And this will be directed by Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins. This is absolutely incredible news as it makes Jenkins the first woman to helm a Star Wars movie as the director.
What’s more, there’s actually a title confirmed for this film. Called Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, this movie will focus on the fighter pilots of the Star Wars films and will be out by Christmas 2023. It’s impeccable timing, as Star Wars: Squadrons the video game has been quite popular with Star Wars fans recently.
Over on Twitter, Patty Jenkins shared a video on Twitter right as the announcement was made during the video presentation.
Kathleen Kennedy spoke positively about bringing women directors to Star Wars.
“We’ve already got ,” Kennedy said, according to an IndieWire story in February of this year. “On The Mandalorian, we’ve got two or three fantastic women working with Star Wars. And we just brought in Deborah Chow who is doing the Obi-Wan series. We’re cultivating a lot of great talent.”
Kennedy was committed to this cause, and it’s finally taken shape.
Taika Waititi developing Star Wars film
Lucasfilm also gave fans an update on the Taika Waititi Star Wars movie that’s currently in development. Nothing much was shown, but they have said that it will be “fresh, unexpected and unique. Judging by the logo alone, it looks like Waititi is adding his special flair to this, just as he did with Thor: Ragnarok. Needless to say, we’re absolutely excited to see where Waititi goes with this film.
