Star Wars in 2021: Are any Star Wars movies coming out in 2021?

More Star Wars movies are in the works. But will any come out in 2021?

December 2019 marked the end of an era. When Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker came out, it not only marked the end of the sequel trilogy, but it also marked the end of the Skywalker saga as a whole.

Now technically, it doesn’t mean that’d be the last we saw of any Skywalkers. This was particularly evident in the announcement this year that Hayden Christensen would return as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker in the Kenobi series as well as the certain twist ending in The Mandalorian season 2’s finale. But those are all series and don’t necessarily tell us what’s in store in the movies department when it comes to Star Wars.

We know that there are at least three Star Wars projects in the works. The first is an untitled Star Wars movie that will be directed by Taika Waititi and is currently in an unknown phase of production. The second is the recently announced Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which seems to be much further along in production. There’s no word on what the third movie will be about or who it’s from. But will either of these movies come out in 2021?

What Star Wars movies are coming out in 2021?

Unfortunately, there will be no Star Wars movies coming out in 2021. From 2015 to 2019, we’ve had at least one Star Wars movie to hold us over. That includes all three parts of the sequel trilogy as well as both Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. But 2020 marked the first time in a while that we saw a lull in Star Wars movies, and it looks like that trend will continue in 2021.

As for the two movies currently in development, we do know when the Patty Jenkins movie will come out. Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is set to come out Christmas 2023. That means we still have roughly three more years until that movie comes out.

There’s currently no date attached to the Taika Waititi film, but hopefully, we can see that movie come out relatively soon as well. According to Collider back in July, three Star Wars movies had dates that were moved. One of those now seems to be Rogue Squadron, which will be out around Dec. 22, 2023. The next spot is Dec. 19, 2025. That could likely be the slot for Waititi’s film, which gives him plenty of time to work on the film. And the final date is Dec.17, 2027.

It’s quite funny to think so far ahead into the future after the trip of a year 2020 has been. But there’s so much Star Wars planned for 2021 and beyond that we’re sure there’ll be more than enough to keep us busy, even during the years without a movie.
