It’s official: Star Wars is getting a free-to-play video game on the Nintendo Switch. Star Wars: Hunters was announced during Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct virtual conference.

From Zynga and Lucasfilm Games, Hunters is a “competitive arena combat game” that puts players in “thrilling, team-based, multiplayer battles featuring a diverse array of distinctive new Star Wars characters.”

Hunters is set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, between films Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, so during the same time period as The Mandalorian.

Nintendo and Zynga didn’t give away too many details about the game coming later this year, but they did share a teaser trailer during the Direct and on StarWars.com:

"Set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, Star Wars: Hunters will connect players in real time to battle in arena settings inspired by iconic Star Wars locales. Play as daring Bounty Hunters, heroes of the Rebellion, and an Imperial stormtrooper, in an action game that immerses players in fast-paced and visually stunning Star Wars conflict."

Based on the teaser trailer, it appears like players will get to create their own unique players based on classic Star Wars characters like Jedi, Rebels, stormtroopers, bounty hunters and even Wookies.

“Star Wars: Hunters draws inspiration from classic Star Wars stories and settings, but with a look and feel that is different from anything we have done before,” Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, said to StarWars.com. “We’re thrilled to introduce this wildly creative cast of characters to our fans on Nintendo Switch, where they can join with their friends in thrilling battles at home or on the go.”

Hunters will be available for free download later this year on Nintendo Switch, the App Store and Google Play. It does not require a Switch Online membership to play.

One of the creators behind Star Wars: Hunters, Zynga, is known for a slew of social and mobile games like FarmVille, Words With Friends and Harry Potter: Puzzles and Spells.
