The upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, appears to be ramping up its production. Now, a new report suggests that a popular character from another big franchise will be joining the Star Wars galaxy.

An exclusive report from Deadline Hollywood states that actress Indira Varma will be joining the Obi-Wan Kenobi cast in an undisclosed role. Varma will join a number of large actors already attached to the project, including the show’s namesake, portrayed by Ewan McGregor, and the villainous Darth Vader, portrayed by Hayden Christensen. Both actors are returning to the Star Wars universe after their original portrayals in the prequel trilogy.

The show is likely to take place between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Given this, there are a number of characters that Varma could be portraying. Obi-Wan Kenobi was living on Tatooine during this period, so perhaps she is playing a desert character that Kenobi will run into. Varma could also be playing a villain alongside Darth Vader, or perhaps a Rebel character that could cross paths with the Empire at some point.

Whatever role Varma ends up playing, the Star Wars world is lucky to have an actress of her caliber. A native of the United Kingdom, Varma has become well known to television buffs, taking on roles in HBO’s Rome while also circulating through a number of large theatre projects.

Varma’s most prominent role, however, was on HBO’s massively successful Game of Thrones, playing the role of Ellaria Sand through three seasons. In 2016, her performance on Game of Thrones earned her a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award, as part of an outstanding ensemble.

Varma’s role in Game of Thrones was as one of the main antagonists. It is plausible, then, to think that she could be taking on a similar role in Obi-Wan Kenobi, although it’s also possible that she could be doing something completely different than what we’ve seen from her before.

Either way, the Star Wars universe is better off having an actress like Indira Varma on their team, as she could bring a number of unique dimensions to whatever she gets involved with. Obi-Wan Kenobi is reportedly slated to start filming either this month or next month in Los Angeles.
