Count Dooku, once one of the most well-respected Jedi Knights amid the High Republic Era, is far better known as the sith lord, Darth Tyranus. Throughout the Clone Wars, Dooku used his sly tactics and swordsmanship to play a pivotal role for the Separatists in the battle playing out across the galaxy.

However, Dooku minimally saw physical action, often handing tasks over to General Grievous, leader of the droid army, and commander Asajj Ventress. As Darth Sidious’ apprentice, Dooku could never train Ventress as much as hoped due to the longstanding Rule of Two. Instead, Dooku ultimately broke ties with Ventress, just as his master eventually did to himself.

What happened to Count Dooku?

In his Attack of the Clones appearance on Geonosis, Dooku reminds us of his dueling skills by quickly dispatching of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi following their escape from the Petranaki Arena. Then comes an intriguing showdown with his former master, Yoda, that ends in a draw.

This first battle, while leaving Dooku unscathed, ultimately ends up being his downfall. Three years later, Dooku encounters Skywalker and Kenobi again amid the Battle of Coruscant in their attempts to rescue Palpatine.

Another intense battle ensues, and after again immobilizing Kenobi, Dooku is overpowered by the much stronger Skywalker. After removing his hands and securing his lightsaber, Skywalker is left with the decision of whether to put an end to the Separatist leader or take him as a prisoner.

With Palpatine calling in his ear — the orchestrator of the rescue attempt — Anakin gives in to his future master’s wishes as a first sign of his fall to the Dark Side. Palpatine put this plan into action to bring Skywalker to the breaking point, and it worked out in his favor instead of Dooku’s.

While his limited on-screen appearances may only show glimpses of it, Dooku was a valiant persona. Unfortunately, his demise came at the hands of the man meant to replace him and the master he served with such dedication. It is surprising he didn’t see that coming all along.
