15. R2-D2 and C-3PO

The first duo Star Wars viewers ever encountered was in the beginning moments of 1977’s A New Hope. R2-D2 and C-3PO, the two droids who have been a part of every Skywalker Saga episode, begin their story aboard the Tantive IV as it is invaded by Imperial stormtroopers. From the beginning, C-3PO seems like he’s out of his element. Worry and a high sense of etiquette drive him, and though we can’t understand R2-D2’s beeps, the way C-3PO reacts to him reveals that R2-D2 is a bit of a “devil-may-care” rogue who operates by his own rules.

They’re the perfect counterbalance to each other, and though their interactions are often marked by frequent bickering and disagreements, it’s clear that they care deeply about each other. C-3PO even goes so far as to say Artoo is his best friend in The Rise of Skywalker. Despite how much they argue, they always find their way back to each other and together create opportunities for the other characters to thrive.
