21. Rey and Finn

The Force Awakens introduced us to Rey and Finn, separately at first, but the two quickly found each other and found themselves caught up in a mission to return BB-8 to the Resistance. Rey and Finn work together so well because they’re both parentless, abandoned to find their own way in the world. Finn’s upbringing as a First Order stormtrooper doesn’t eliminate the good in him, and Rey’s upbringing as a scavenger doesn’t eliminate her hope that she’ll find her family again someday. Together, they’re both trying to find a sense of belonging and purpose, and this creates a closeness between them that remains strong throughout the sequel trilogy.

Though it seems clear that Finn’s interests in Rey are romantic at first, their relationship evolves into one of close friendship and a familial bond. Even throughout The Last Jedi, when the two of them are a galaxy apart, Finn is driven to protect Rey and find her again. As they both continue to discover their place in the universe in The Rise of Skywalker, their relationship continues to deepen, even as they begin to sense each other through the Force. As Rey copes with her identity, outside of Kylo Ren, Finn is the only person in the universe who genuinely understands what she’s going through.
