10. Dark Phoenix (2019)

Some movies just don’t land, whether it be with critics or with a large section of the audience that views them, but that can happen despite the fact that they’re still incredibly entertaining and well worth checking out. Star Wars fans know this feeling, whether it’s because they still enjoyed The Rise of Skywalker, or love to rewatch the prequels, or adore Solo: A Star Wars Story.

It’s a feeling that is all too familiar, and it’s one that fans of the X-Men series may have experienced when they watched Dark Phoenix. In many ways, Dark Phoenix felt doomed from the start.

The first X-Men trilogy failed to deliver on a finale with The Last Stand, which was the first live-action film to tackle the ultra-powerful Phoenix form of Jean Grey. The later reboot led by First Class also fumbled their third installment with X-Men: Apocalypse, and few thought Dark Phoenix was going to fix that.

Despite being a box office failure and being critically panned to the point that the title holds only a 22 percent Tomatometer Score, it’s actually got a 64 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. In a similar vein, The Rise of Skywalker has only a 51 percent Tomatometer Score but maintains an 86 percent Audience Score.

Dark Phoenix is not the best film in the X-Men series, and there was stiff competition and legacy that it was trying to live up to, but Dark Phoenix still provides some entertaining performances, must-see action, and a handful of truly powerful and unforgettable moments. If you haven’t seen it, head to HBO Max now and see Dark Phoenix for yourself rather than letting the critics make the call for you.
