7. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Little Shop of Horrors burst onto the scene in 1986, and while the box office success wasn’t quite as big as the studio had hoped, this horror black comedy musical was a smash hit on VHS and Beta (yes, BETA) that went on to develop a cult following in later years. Little Shop of Horrors had the mainstays of 1980s film with a cast that includes Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, James Belushi, and Bill Murray.

If you’re racking your brain trying to realize why Little Shop of Horrors is so intrinsically linked to Star Wars, you actually have to look behind the camera at the director of the movie. While Star Wars fans will forever identify him as the iconic and unforgettable voice and puppeteer of Jedi Master Yoda, Frank Oz, also made an indelible mark on cinema as a director.

Frank Oz had already proven himself as a director with The Dark Crystal in 1982 and The Muppets Take Manhattan in 1984, but Little Shop of Horrors proved to be an altogether unique challenge both creatively and technically. His puppeteering skill was put to the test with the creation and performance of Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors, which at times required the work of around 60 different puppeteers, most of whom had worked with Oz before.

Whereas our glimpses of Frank Oz in the Star Wars universe are only through a single character, Little Shop of Horrors is an unforgettably unique vision with Frank Oz at the helm as director. It’s available now on HBO Max, and this classic is still a must-see.
