When Star Wars returned with the sequel trilogy, one of the most fascinating characters for fans to see was the powerful Supreme Leader Snoke. He was shrouded in mystery right from the very beginning, and there were many theories by fans as he first appeared.
While speculation ran rampant as we slowly got bits of information through The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and even The Rise of Skywalker, things are finally clear now. How did Supreme Leader Snoke die, and who was he really?
How did Snoke die?
The death of the Supreme Leader was one of the most powerful and controversial moments in The Last Jedi. He was the ruler of the First Order at the beginning of the sequel trilogy and into The Last Jedi, but that wasn’t a position he could hold onto.
Despite being the top of the First Order, he mostly left the control of the First Order military up to General Armitage Hux so that Snoke could keep his focus on the Force and the turning of Kylo Ren. Unfortunately for the Supreme Leader, tensions between him and Ren began to rise, especially as Kylo Ren struggled with his connection to his grandfather Darth Vader.
In a powerfully unforgettable scene for any who saw The Last Jedi, the death of the Supreme Leader came as he sat in the throne room believing he had manipulated Kylo Ren into killing Rey. Instead, Ren had shrouded his own thoughts, turning Rey’s lightsaber on the throne and activating it to bisect and kill Supreme Leader Snoke.
Who was Supreme Leader Snoke really?
When Supreme Leader Snoke died suddenly in The Last Jedi, many fans were clamoring for answers about who he had really been, his origin, and any bit of information that could be given. Ultimately, The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Snoke was simply a puppet for the still-living Darth Sidious.
The Supreme Leader was simply an artificial genetic construct made on the planet Exegol by Darth Sidious, who had managed to survive his supposed death at the end of Return of the Jedi. Supreme Leader Snoke’s true origin ended up being one that fans knew all too well.
Recently, The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson actually revealed that he wasn’t really concerned with the Supreme Leader when crafting the movie’s story. Instead, Snoke ended up being used for Kylo Ren, which Johnson saw as much more important to the story and progression of the trilogy.
