5. Code 8

Code 8 is a feature-length film based on a Canadian short film. The film stars real-life brothers Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell. The movie centers around a superhuman man who works with criminals to get money to aid in his sick mother’s medical care. The movie takes place in the 20th century during a time when people discover that there are humans with special abilities, known as Powers. Powers are forced to disclose their abilities to the government and were largely marginalized and become less than humans. In fear of them, the government uses drones with facial recognition and the latest tech, called Guardians, to stop crimes related to powers.

Connor Reed is a young man who has been caring for his mother Mary who is dealing with brain cancer. Because she is a Cryo, her abilities become uncontrollable and skewed at times due to her medical condition. Unfortunately, because they are Powers, they can’t afford treatments for her. A crime lord approaches Connor Reed to recruit him for his supernatural help in future crimes and chemical theft. Connor Reed agrees to join him to pay for his mother’s treatment and learns how to control and harness his abilities better. His mother gets sicker and the police are quickly on his tail and even consider planting evidence on him.

This movie leans more on the side of action and adventure with a dark undertone of crime. It still has the battle of good vs. evil and sci-fi elements to it.
