6. Zathura: A Space Adventure

If you’re looking for a family-friendly film that the kids can enjoy, this, Zathura: A Space Adventure, would be your go-to movie. The film stars Jonah Bobo as Danny, Josh Hutcherson as Walter, Dax Shepard as the astronaut, and Kristen Stewart as Lisa.

The movie centers around a father leaving his two younger sons Danny (Jonah Bobo) and Walter (Josh Hutcherson) in the somewhat capable hands of their teenage sister Lisa (Kristen Stewart). They are told to stay inside the house, so the brothers discover a space-themed board game hidden away and decide to play it. Once they start the game, their home and family are thrust into space and soon realize that the game affects real-life aspects and makes them decide on what their future will hold. The brothers soon meet an astronaut (Dax Shepard) who attempts to help them win the game to go back home. Unfortunately, they later select a card that leaves their sister into a cryonic sleep that freezes her solid for a good portion of the movie. They also realize that the game is meant to be played fairly, as Walter accuses Danny of cheating.

Although this is a family movie, it still has space battles with the evil Zorgons and it does feature droids. The concept might sound familiar, this movie is actually a spinoff of the Robin Williams family classic Jumanji.

The movie was helped Hutcherson rocket into superstardom with his later role in The Hunger Games franchise while Kristen Stewart became a household name for her starring role in the Twilight saga.
