7. The accessibility

Boiled down to just a few words, Game of Thrones can be described as violence, sex and dragons. The series is action-packed and full of violence and gore, along with dozens of sex scenes and full nudity. Perfectly fine and entertaining for adults, but a far cry from being something you could watch as a family.

Star Wars, on the other hand, is much more accessible to audiences of all ages. Sure, its foundations are rooted in politics and war, but violence in adult content in Star Wars is few and far between. There are deaths, tragedy and epic space battles, but the intensity of such things is portrayed through dialogue, score and emotion rather than gratuitous gore.

And while Game of Thrones started out with a slow burn fandom and then exploded in popularity by the last several seasons, Star Wars’ fandom is generations in the making. Those who got into Star Wars back in 1977 with the first film are still fans today and can easily connect with people whose first venture into a galaxy far, far away was the prequel films or the animated TV shows.

A love of Star Wars has become something parents share with and pass down to their children to enjoy.

There is, quite literally, something in Star Wars for everyone to enjoy. The films themselves appeal to most ages even if the younger ones can’t quite grasp the complexities of space politics. The animated series are certainly geared toward a younger crowd as are a slew of children’s books and junior novels. As for the adults who grew up with Star Wars, there are just as many, if not more, novels and reference books to dig into.

Star Wars is so popular and appeals to such a wide audience that Disney gave it an immersive land at its parks in California and Florida. The lands’ signature rides — Smuggler’s Run and Rise of the Resistance — are also accessible to almost all ages while still providing a thrilling, immersive experience.

Most of Game of Thrones is enthralling fantasy storytelling, but Star Wars gets more brownie points for being something the whole family can enjoy.
