Disney has secretly shown off a ‘real’ lightsaber that could be available soon

Disney looks to be taking the Star Wars experience to the next level with a new invention that was secretly introduced on Thursday. We’re talking about there being a real lightsaber currently out there from Disney — or, at least as real as a replica lightsaber could get.
This is according to various outlets that are reporting that the replica lightsabers were introduced during a virtual press conference called A Special Look Inside Disney Parks yesterday. As Attractions Magazine reports, toward the end of the conference, Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro appeared at the soon-to-reopen Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland. And from there, D’Amaro pulled out a lightsaber, ignited it, and said to the audience “it’s real.”
Just before that, he reportedly said fans will never know what they’re going to come up with next at Disney Parks — which seemingly means to confirm that we may see these lightsabers hit Galaxy’s Edge parks sooner or later.
Disney retractable lightsaber
Of course, Galaxy’s Edge already has Savi’s Workshop, where you can build your own lightsaber and keep it as a souvenir once you leave. But the current lightsabers at Galaxy’s Edge are permanently extended, meaning there’s no way to retract them the way they do in the movies. From what it sounds like, you will have the ability to extend and retract this new lightsaber. And judging by the ecstatic reaction of this journalist on Twitter (strong language advisory in the tweets), the invention seems to be off the charts.
Many outlets are also reporting that a patent had been filed by Disney a while ago for a retractable lightsaber design. And this could be the final product of what D’Amaro was showing off during the press conference. Back in 2018, WDW News Today showed off the photos from that patent, which included information on the technology behind it — so nearly three years later, we’re one step closer to seeing what the design looks like in real life.
Unfortunately, no screengrabs/photos were allowed during the press conference. And Disney did not provide photographs or videos for the press to share after the event. But since they were willing to show it off briefly during that press conference, it shouldn’t be long before they show it off to the rest of the world.
