Dream casting the Star Wars saga: Emma Watson as Princess Leia

Again, I can’t help but draw parallels between two sets of fictional characters. This time, I’m reminded of some similarities between Hermione Granger, the Harry Potter character Emma Watson will probably be best remembered for when we look back on her career, and Princess Leia.

They’re both smart, headstrong women who can come off as haughty to the people around them, and who fall for the scruffy sidekick over the predestined hero. By itself, that’s not enough reason to cast Watson in the role, but it’s a start.

Since Harry Potter, Watson has diversified her portfolio, acting in everything from horror thrillers (Regression) to period dramas (My Week with Marilyn) to loony comedies (This is the End). That’s the sign of someone who intends to stick around in the industry, rather than bow out after she’s wrapped on the role that made her famous. With her spunk and determination, Watson would make an excellent Leia.

Plus, at the risk of indulging in stereotypes, it’s probably not a bad idea for a Brit to play a princess. I’m not saying she should use her British accent or anything, but a vague air of superiority may come naturally to her. That could come in handy when playing Leia.
