Star Wars: Matt Smith looks menacing as Thrawn in new image
By Mia Johnson
Here on Dork Side of the Force, we’ve been raving quite a lot about Grand Admiral Thrawn recently. The second book in the Thrawn Ascendancy series has just been released this week, titled Greater Good. And we’ve reviewed a handful of fan art pieces already imagining who would play him in the role.
That being said, we’d like to keep this train of excitement moving for the Chiss character because he’s one we truly hope to see in the Star Wars universe quite soon. No doubt about it, a live-action Thrawn is imminent in the Star Wars Universe, and it’s possible we could see him on screen when the Ahsoka series debuts on Disney+ in the near future.
With him disappearing with Ezra Bridger following the animated series Star Wars Rebels, there’s been so much mystery surrounding the two characters — and at this rate, fans are practically begging to know what’s happened to the two.
Well, that story has to be told at some point. And while Lucasfilm has not officially announced that Thrawn will be a part of the live-action Star Wars universe, nor has he been cast, we can still take some time to imagine who could play the blue character in the live-action world.
What Matt Smith could look like as Thrawn in Star Wars
We’ve thrown around the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Mads Mikkelsen as possible actors for the role, but now we’re adding Matt Smith into the mix thanks to some new fan art by @barrett.digital.
You can check out the fan art of Matt Smith as Thrawn here on Instagram, and it certainly does get one thinking about the possibilities.
Matt Smith has most famously starred as the Eleventh Doctor for several seasons of Doctor Who. And it’s given the actor a bit of a reputation similar to the do-gooder Time Lord. Though, it mustn’t be forgotten that Smith is a good actor and can fill just about any role perfectly. On Netflix, we’ve seen him as Prince Philip in The Crown. And the actor will even be starring in the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon as Daemon Targaryen (yes, a relative to Daenerys Targaryen) soon. So he certainly can be quite flexible when it comes to roles.
After the letdown of not seeing Smith in the Star Wars sequel series, it would be awesome to see him finally in the universe via Thrawn. But then again, there are so many great actors who could portray Thrawn on screen that it’s getting hard to pick at this point!
The Game of Thrawns has a new contender: Matt Smith. Would you like to see Smith in the role, or is this a role best left to Thrawn voice actor Lars Mikkelsen? Let us know in the comments!
