22. The Last Jedi teaser poster

Revealed at Star Wars Celebration in April before the movie’s release in December of the same year, this was really the first look we got at any official images of the middle chapter of the sequel for the Star Wars trilogy. After Luke was missing entirely from any of the posters for The Force Awakens, it was thrilling to see his face taking up so much space on this poster.

There was no doubt about it this time around, Luke was going to be a major part of this movie. The almost overwhelming amount of red that dominates this poster was unlike anything we’d ever seen on a Star Wars poster before. It was clear from this first image that The Last Jedi was going to be a very different kind of Star Wars movie.

Seeing Kylo Ren’s face on the poster was also a shift away from the unexpected. Darth Vader’s mask was one of the most iconic images on the posters and other advertising throughout the original trilogy. For most of the promotion leading up to The Force Awakens, it looked like Kylo Ren was being positioned to take that place. His mask adorned the posters and toys from the movie. But here was the first image advertising the next movie and the mask was nowhere to be seen.
