10. TROOPS

This mashup of Star Wars and the long-running TV show COPS, tells the unseen story of what happened to Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru while Luke was chasing down R2-D2 and visiting Ben Kenobi’s house. The short film is told from the perspective of the stormtroopers who are visiting the homestead, investigating reports of a disturbance, only to have things go terribly wrong. What’s really memorable about this film is how it kicked off the modern Star Wars fan film.

This video, along with Weird Al’s “The Saga Begins” music video, were some of the first Star Wars-themed videos to be widely distributed on the internet in the late ’90s. This video came out at the perfect time in history and was spread across the internet like wildfire. The movie has inspired so many other Star Wars fan films and actually ended up winning the Pioneer Award in 2002 at the first official Star Wars fan film awards. Director Kevin Rubio (who also wrote the Tag and Bink comics for Dark Horse) has stated that George Lucas has told him that TROOPS can be considered a canon part of the Star Wars universe, though we’re not sure if that holds true in the Disney era of Star Wars.
