If there’s one thing we’ve come to expect in the Disney era of Star Wars, it’s Marvel-like narrative links to keep us anticipated for the next round of content.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to air on Disney+ in 2022 and will feature the much-anticipated return of Ewan McGregor in the iconic titular role. But will we get a glimpse of the desert wandering Jedi before then?
In previous doses of Star Wars material, we have often been treated to special cameo appearances by fan favorites as well as newcomers that serve as characterized teasers for an upcoming show, film or video game. One notable example, Saw Gerrera, has appeared in a wide variety of media since his introduction in season 5 of The Clone Wars and recently made his own guest appearance in The Bad Batch.
Are viewers in for a sighting of Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Bad Batch?
Kenobi’s presence in the show would make a great deal of sense. The renegade members of Clone Force 99 have shown an eagerness to touch base with fellow fugitives from the newly formed Galactic Empire. In the most recent episode, they reunited with another Clone Wars alumni: the deserter soldier Cut, whom they aided in securing his family’s safety. The sage counsel of a Jedi in hiding would be of huge benefit to any seeking shelter from the Emperors’ wrath.
Old Ben himself has made appearances in other Star Wars animations. In Rebels, we see the recalibrated Jedi Temple security hologram message belonging to Kanan Jarrus, and then again in later seasons, we see the man himself in his iconic final duel with Maul — both occasions voiced by the talented James Arnold Taylor.
It has been 16 years since we last saw McGregor in a live-action capacity. Although he has provided his voice as Kenobi in the sequel trilogy, we have yet to receive a single live-action shot of the Jedi since he parted ways with an infant Luke Skywalker in the closing scene of Revenge of the Sith.
Another possibility for an Obi-Wan cameo could be in the upcoming show The Book of Boba Fett, which will likely take place on Kenobi’s home in exile: the desert world of Tatooine. Since the Jedi met his demise many years before the show supposedly takes place, this is somewhat doubtful. Then again, there’s always the possibility for flashbacks. (How did Fett get out of the Sarlacc pit?!).
