John Boyega to reunite with original director for Attack The Block sequel
Before John Boyega became a globally recognized face in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he was trudging through the streets of London fighting aliens in 2011’s Attack The Block. Fans have been begging for a sequel for years, and now it appears that wish has come to fruition.
As reported by Variety and Deadline, it was announced today that Boyega will be returning for Attack The Block 2. The project will see him reunited with Joe Cornish, the director of the first film. “I’m thrilled we’re officially announcing our return to the world of Attack The Block on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release,” Cornish said in a statement. “I can’t wait to work alongside John [Boyega] again, bringing audiences an even bigger slice of inner-city alien action.”
Boyega was relatively unknown in the film industry when he was plucked to play the lead character, Moses, in the 2011 movie. Alongside Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker and comedian Nick Frost, Attack The Block followed a lowly street gang, led by Boyega’s Moses, who team up to fight a group of aliens in South London.
While the film did not receive a ton of global recognition, it did fairly well in UK movie theaters. By the end of the film’s run, it had racked up over $6 million at the worldwide box office. Despite being small in terms of international profit, the movie became something of a cult hit. This being the case, fans have continually lobbied Boyega on social media to helm a sequel, even after he shot to superstardom after being cast in the Star Wars franchise.
Boyega himself seems to be a huge fan of the original movie and was eager to jump back into Moses’ world. Besides starring in the movie, he will also act as a producer on the project. In a post on Instagram, Boyega described himself as “bloody excited” for the sequel:
“It’s been a decade since Attack The Block was released and so much has changed since then,” Boyega told Variety. “I’m excited to see this heightened story return to the streets of London. Moses has remained one of my favorite characters to play and bringing him back is a huge honor.”
No information has been released on when production on Attack The Block 2 will begin. Hopefully, though, we will see Moses charging through the streets of London sooner rather than later.
