Star Wars teases the Empire’s hidden secrets in The Mandalorian
By Ben Winnell
Five years after the Battle of Endor, the once-great Empire is now nothing more than a series of dilapidated warlord states with little real power.
This is the reality of the galaxy far, far away as presented to us in the first season of the hit Disney+ show The Mandalorian.
A recent info drop on StarWars.com, reporting on a new reference book: Star Wars: The Mandalorian: Guide to Season One, gave us a rare behind the scenes look at some of the inner workings of the Imperial Remnant as seen in the mysterious characters of The Client played by acclaimed German filmmaker Werner Herzog and Dr. Pershing played by Omid Abtahi (who also voiced the character Amis in The Clone Wars).
Much of The Client and Pershing’s history remains unclear, as does their intentions towards the Force-sensitive child Grogu, who has very much become the new poster child for the Mandalorian and indeed Star Wars as a whole.
Behind the scenes info on the crumbling Empire in The Mandalorian
A vital clue that went overlooked by many viewers was an ominous scene in Chapter 12: The Siege from the second season of the show. A hologram of the enigmatic Dr. Pershing is describing failures regarding experiences with Grogu’s (The Child’s) blood. The doctor also makes mention of “M-count” an auspicious reference to midi-chlorians. In the background, we can even hear the faint sound of Kylo Ren’s theme from the sequel trilogy.
This could very much mean that the collapsing Empire is attempting to experiment with Force-sensitive beings in an attempt to get a tactical edge over the fledgling New Republic. It also gives terrifying context to the mysterious deformed creatures in the tanks found in the laboratory.
Could this be the early signs of the First Order? Are the creatures in the tanks failed experiments that will one day result in the creation of Supreme Leader Snoke? Perhaps time will tell. The mystery surrounding the final days of the old Empire and the creation of the First Order is certainly fuel for the imagination. For new it seems Lucasfilm is content to let us speculate.
