The Bad Batch has been delighting audiences since its premiere on May 4 (Star Wars Day), even with its heavy subject matter concerning clones and inhibitor chips. Come December, fans of the legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett will be able to enjoy a live-action series devoted to his character entitled The Book of Boba Fett. But what about The Mandalorian?

Can fans of the first-ever live-action Star Wars series expect to return to its side of the franchise’s universe? It’s a question die-hard fans know by now. However, it’s also one that might be on the minds of casual viewers or those new to the show looking to see if they should invest time in a series that may have an abrupt ending.

For those wondering about a third season of The Mandalorian, rest easy. The series was renewed in December 2020.

But when can viewers expect to see season 3 premiere on Disney+? Here’s what we know.

The Mandalorian season 3 release date

Buckle up, we’re in for a wait, y’all. Jon Favreau announced last year that The Mandalorian wouldn’t begin filming until The Book of Boba Fett wrapped, giving the spinoff the necessary room to develop without its parent series also being in production.

Ming-Na Wen, who will star alongside Temuera Morrison in the series, recently confirmed filming had concluded on the show. For The Mandalorian fans, that’s a good sign that the studio will now be pivoting back to the series. However, Pedro Pascal, in an Actor on Actors interview with Ewan McGregor, did state filming had yet to start on season 3.

Usually, the longer it takes for production to begin, the longer the wait time is for a season release. But it’s likely filming won’t be what delays the premiere of season 3. Given The Book of Boba Fett is due to premiere in December 2021, the likelihood of The Mandalorian returning in the early months of 2022 is low.

Big series often drop months apart from one another to allow audiences and the media time to digest what they’ve watched and negate internal competition. Unless The Book of Boba Fett bleeds right into The Mandalorian season 3, necessitating a short gap between the two releases, there’s no reason for the shows to land on Disney+ practically back to back.

It’s likely fans won’t see season 3 until the spring or early summer of 2022. The streamer could surprise fans with a short couple months between the two series, but it’s doubtful.
