What is the next Star Wars show after The Bad Batch?
By Mia Johnson
Since the launch of Disney+ in late 2019, Star Wars has entered a new era of its franchise — one led by the small screen and not the big screen.
This new era was launched with the introduction of The Mandalorian when the streaming service first launched. And as the first live-action Star Wars television show, the series set the tone for what to expect from these Disney+ shows going forward: high-quality television that matches (if not outdoes) the Star Wars films as we know them.
After that, Disney+ released the seventh and final season of The Clone Wars. Following The Clone Wars in late 2020 was the second season of The Mandalorian. And finally, this year, we were treated to The Clone Wars spinoff series: Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
It has been revealed that The Bad Batch is a 16-episode series, which means it will run all through the summer. But after that, what’s next in store for Star Wars television? Here’s what you can expect.
Next Star Wars shows on Disney+
After The Bad Batch is over, there are two series that are set to come out this year.
The first series set to come out later in 2021 is Star Wars: Visions — set to premiere on Disney+ on Sept. 22. This will be another animated series, all done in the style of Japanese anime. Unlike The Bad Batch, though, this series will not be canon and will, in fact, be an anthology series. It’s more like Marvel Studios’ What If…?, in which every episode will be a standalone adventure.
The second of those is The Book of Boba Fett. While there’s no specific date for that series, it will for sure arrive on the platform in December, just in time for the holidays.
In this series, we will pick up where we left Boba Fett and Fennec Shand at the end of The Mandalorian. The two overtook Jabba the Hutt’s old place from Bib Fortuna, and now it looks like they have a huge stake in the goings-on over on Tatooine. What that will look like, we can’t say for sure. But if all goes well, the series might get a second season.
Unfortunately, we won’t get season 3 of The Mandalorian this year. But the series will follow up after The Book of Boba Fett, and the two series will likely be very interconnected.
