Director of Watchmen and Justice League, Zack Snyder has revealed that his latest project entitled Rebel Moon came from a rewrite of an old pitch of his that he intended to make into a Star Wars film.

The director, fresh from the release of this year’s zombie film Army of the Dead, will begin production on his longtime project next year. Much like his latest film, Rebel Moon will find its home on Netflix where Snyder seems to have established a solid working relationship. He hopes that the film can spawn multiple sequels and be turned into a large-scale intellectual property with a complex, sprawling universe much like Star Wars.

The original Star Wars pitch from Snyder was a story that involved samurai-like warriors inspired by the films of Akira Kurosawa. This would indeed be appropriate for Star Wars seeing as the films of Kurosawa were a huge inspiration for George Lucas.

However, we now know that Snyder’s film will be set in an entirely new universe where he says a human colony far from Earth is under threat of a cosmic tyrant. In response, a mysterious woman must bring together a variety of warriors from all over the galaxy to combat the threat.

Snyder will not be making a Star Wars film, but will his new movie feel like one?

These story beats certainly sound plausible within the galaxy far, far away. However, Snyder’s unique style would be sure to offset any perceived similarity between his films and that of the Star Wars saga. If the director sticks to his usual guns, we can expect a lot of washed-out colors and long, slow-motion sequences to spice up a genre that has seen a lot of use lately.

Netflix is notoriously choosey when it comes to committing to sequels to its works, often canceling shows after their first or second season before giving them a chance to be fleshed out. However, Snyder has a dedicated fanbase. If they can successfully negotiate their way into getting the Snyder cut of Justice League out, surely, they can muster the support to get Snyder the sci-fi franchise he clearly wants.
