What is the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie about?

We’re in an age of prime Star Wars content thanks to Disney‘s push for more stories from the franchise to be told on both the big and small screen. However, what’s been on the release schedule has primarily been live-action television series set to draw fans of the franchise to Disney+ in droves. We’re in for just over a one-year break until the next film, but we suspect the Rogue Squadron movie will be well worth the wait.

Helmed by Patty Jenkins, Rogue Squadron is the first standalone film to be released after the franchise closed out its Skywalker saga on theater screens. The focus of this new era is to expand the Star Wars galaxy, pushing the story into directions it has yet to take on screen. And for the upcoming movie, it will start with a closer look at the galaxy’s fighter pilots.

According to StarWars.com, this is what viewers can expect from Rogue Squadron:

"The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy."

Sounds like we’re in for an exciting new adventure. Here’s what we know so far about the film.

Rogue Squadron movie synopsis

An official synopsis has yet to be released for the movie. The plot of the film is basically under lock and key as not even a whisper of what it will be about has made its way to the Internet. However, in an interview with the Associated Press, Jenkins spoke about honoring the history of the Rogue Squadron legacy that has come before the film adaption.

"The Michael Stackpole books and the video games and all of the Rogue Squadron books, there’s an incredible history that’s really important to honor. And yet, it must be brought to a new age, because we have to tell a new story with it…"

So expect to see a fresh take on the Rogue Squadron story that still pays homage to what came before, but is out to chart its own path. Specifically, Jenkins wants to make a great fighter pilot movie. That’s her focus which means we’re in for an action-packed ride.

Rogue Squadron movie release date

Rogue Squadron will fly into theaters December 2023. StarWars.com has confirmed the movie will drop in time for Christmas.
