At the end of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, hero Jyn Erso’s story came to quite an… explosive end. After successfully stealing the plans for the Death Star on Scarif, it looked like that was pretty much the end of Jyn Erso as we knew it.
Well, actress Felicity Jones says otherwise. At least, she’s among the many fans who think that Jyn Erso still has ample opportunity to return to Star Wars some way, somehow.
Speaking to the HeyUGuys (H/T to Digital Spy), Jones shared her thoughts on the future of her character in the Star Wars universe. When asked if she’s shutting the door on the character, Jones replied, “Never shut the door on Jyn Erso. Never!”
She followed up with that statement, saying: “I was having this conversation with someone the other day, and I was trying to say, ‘It’s a bit of a nuclear fallout at the end of the film.’ And they were like, ‘No, it didn’t feel like that! It doesn’t feel like they die.’ And I was like, ‘Well, there you go. There’s a chance of a comeback.'”
The interviewer agreed with her, saying “No one’s ever dead in Star Wars.” And isn’t that the truth? So, is there truly space for Jyn Erso to return in Star Wars the way she says she could?
Will Jyn Erso come back in Star Wars?
As we know, you can never say never when it comes to Star Wars. And Jyn was such an enjoyable, new character that she’d be a welcome return to the franchise if ever she had the chance.
Though, it feels a bit cheap to say Jyn and Cassian Andor would have survived after that massive explosion on Scarif. Sometimes it’s best to let characters have a conclusive end to their story, even if it’s through that character’s death.
We’re not sure Lucasfilm would go in the direction of having a story take place after the events of Rogue One that includes Jyn. But again, just as Boba Fett survived the Sarlacc Pit, we’re sure Star Wars could pull off the return of Jyn too.
The more logical solution, then, would be to go back and have her character appear in a time before the events of Rogue One/A New Hope. Perhaps it may feel a little weird like Black Widow, considering we already know she dies. But since we’ve witnessed the deaths of tons of other Star Wars characters who we later revisit at a younger age (Obi-Wan, Luke, and Darth Vader/Anakin just to name a few), we feel like that won’t be as big of a problem.
So, there are a few different ways Star Wars can pull off the return of Jyn Erso. And the way Jones sounds so excited about that possibility, we’ll just assume Lucasfilm hasn’t abandoned this idea either.
