A new era of Star Wars dawned for the franchise when Disney+, the streaming arm of the House of Mouse, delved into its first live-action original series for this galaxy full of stories. Since The Mandalorian’s debut on the platform, more shows have been slated for release delving into differing points in the timeline fans are familiar with.
However, Star Wars films are very much still at the forefront of people’s minds as they’ve had quite the impact on pop culture and sci-fi storytelling since A New Hope premiered in 1977. The path Disney is now charting will leave the Skywalker saga behind to dive deeper into other aspects of this rich universe. A part of this new legacy set to commence is the highly anticipated Taika Waititi Star Wars movie that was announced on Star Wars Day 2020.
Word has been quiet on what the film will be about and where Waititi will take fans in this vast galaxy. StarWars.com revealed that Waititi will direct the movie and share co-writing duties with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, but that’s all we’ve heard about the project since that announcement.
But, that hasn’t stopped speculation on what ground the film could cover.
The Taika Waititi Star Wars movie synopsis
While there isn’t a synopsis for Waititi’s Star Wars movie yet, Inverse reports the film could cover the Dawn of the Jedi storyline told in both a comic book series and a novel by Tim Lebbon.
This theory is based on the graphic accompanying Kathleen Kennedy when she announced the film. Fans have speculated the flying pyramid-like structure in the image is a ship called Tho Yor. Doubling as a weapon, this ship carried the Force-sensitive proto-Jedi across the galaxy in what is known as “The First Migration.”
If the Taika Waititi Star Wars movie is an adaptation of Dawn of the Jedi, viewers will be taken incredibly far back in this galaxy’s history. 26,000 years before the first Star Wars film to be exact.
The Taika Waititi Star Wars movie release date
Fans will definitely have to wait for some time to see what Waititi does with this film. According to IMDb, his Star Wars movie isn’t scheduled to release until 2025. We’ll keep you posted on more news concerning the film, including a title reveal and production starting, as it rolls in.
Based on this release year projection, it does look like the Waititi movie will be the second future Star Wars film to hit theaters. Likely around Christmas. The first will be Rogue Squadron, the starfighter pilot movie directed by Patty Jenkins that will hit theaters in time for the holidays in 2023.
