5. Mairan

One of the best for last is the Bors of Mairan. Boy, do these aquatic creatures need to be featured more throughout the galaxy. These semi-sentient cephalopods have the incredible ability to read minds via their tentacles. Anyone who comes in its path is left shaken.

Rogue One marked the canon debut of the Mairan race in the form of Bor Gullett. Bor was being used by rebel Saw Gerrera to extract information of those he sought to be a threat. Former Empire pilot Bodhi Rook got a first-hand experience with the creature and nearly ended up losing his mind. Gerrera shared the creature’s abilities with Rook, explaining that “Bor Gullett will know the truth.” In addition to the rebels using a Mairan, the Empire also had one frozen in order to interrogate enemies of the Emperor.

Whether it was Forest Whittaker’s impassioned delivery or the image of the creature crawling closer to the camera in a strobe light, it has stuck with me for years. According to writer Chris Weitz, Bor Gullett is “an empath; he can understand exactly what you’re thinking, but he also feeds off emotions.” It’s not known if all of the Mairan race have these abilities, but there are a few at least.

These creatures are completely freaky, with so many tentacles and those small, lifeless eyes. It makes you shudder just thinking about it. However, I want to know more. They’re incredibly dangerous in the hands of military leaders but what are they like when they’re not helping torture people? Do they like sentient beings or are they afraid of them due to them being used? I have more questions than that but you’ve already endured me fangirling too long over this creature.
