Daisy Ridley’s breakfast with Kathleen Kennedy is probably no big deal … right?

When Daisy Ridley gave her final performance as Rey Skywalker in The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, it was generally assumed that she would step away from Star Wars for a while. In the past few years, she has seemingly moved on, starring in other movies and now audio productions. But a recent interview has many speculating that she could, at least someday, return.

In a recent interview with Grazia discussing her new endeavors into audio dramas, Ridley was asked about what it was like to bid farewell to a galaxy far, far away after finishing the sequel trilogy — not just to the character of Rey, but to the people she worked so closely with for so many years.

“[W]e were so young. We started this thing together in our early 20s and now I’m 29,” she said. “But we all keep in touch, even though John is the busiest man in the world. I went for breakfast with Kathy Kennedy the other day which was so nice.”

She just really casually dropped that on us, didn’t she? As if having breakfast with Kathleen Kennedy is a totally normal thing. Maybe for the recent Star Wars cast, it is. Or maybe there’s more to that story that Ridley isn’t revealing.

Breakfast with Kennedy

Based on her recent focus on audio performing, it doesn’t seem like returning to a live-action Star Wars project would make total career sense for her anytime soon. There’s always audio productions set in the Star Wars universe, which have released annually over the past three years and likely with more on the way. And voiceover work in animation is always a possibility, though in either circumstance it might feel strange to hear her voicing a character other than Rey if that were the plan.

But just because Ridley and Kennedy went for breakfast on a random Tuesday (we don’t know if it was a Tuesday, but that seems like a great day for breakfast with the president of Lucasfilm), it doesn’t mean either have plans to bring Rey or the actor back into a galaxy far, far away… yet. It’s completely normal to keep up professional relationships in your industry even if there are no current plans to do a project together. It’s possible it was more of a casual, friendly outing. We’ll probably never know.

If Ridley were to return to Star Wars one day, it probably wouldn’t happen for a while. And there wouldn’t be anything wrong with that. If Rey’s story were to continue on the big or small screen, it deserves the necessary care, thought, and time to make it worthwhile. Although, a cameo in a future show or movie wouldn’t be unheard of. Mark Hamill keeps doing it. Why not?
