The 2021 Saturn Awards have come and gone, and even though it’s been a minute since the end of The Clone Wars, the first season of The Mandalorian, and the premiere of The Rise of Skywalker, all three Star Wars projects won awards this year.

In the film category, according to DeadlineThe Rise of Skywalker ended the night with five total victories, thanks to John Williams, J.J. Abrams, and many more. The awards included:

  • Best Science Fiction Film
  • Best Director (J. J. Abrams)
  • Best Music (John Williams)
  • Best Make-Up (Amanda Knight, Neal Scanlan)
  • Best Special Effects (Roger Guyett, Neal Scanlan,  Patrick Tubach,  Dominic Tuohy)

But The Rise of Skywalker wasn’t just the top winner of the night. The film was also the most-nominated project up for prizes, including Best Actress (Daisy Ridley), Best Screenplay (Abrams and Chris Terrio), and Best Supporting Actor (Ian McDiarmid and Adam Driver).

The movie was also nominated previously for three Oscars: Sound Editing, Original Score, and Visual Effects.

The Mandalorian won Best Presentation on Television (Under 10 Episodes), and was also nominated for Best Guest Starring Performance (Giancarlo Esposito), all for season 1 of the series.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars also took home the award for Best Animated TV Series.

If you’re wondering why The Rise of SkywalkerThe Mandalorian, and The Clone Wars all managed to snag awards despite 2019 and 2020 releases, you can thank the Saturn Awards’ eligibility period, which ran from July 19, 2019, to November 15, 2020. Thus, season 1 of Mandalorian, season 7 of Clone Wars, and The Rise of Skywalker all made it into the 2021 ceremony.

The Rise of Skywalker may have been the final film in the larger story that began back in 1977, but it’s not the end of Star Wars as we know it. We’re just a few years away from the next movie, and the next TV show, The Book of Boba Fett, will drop before the year ends.

If this year’s Saturn Awards are any indication, the franchise is thriving, and there’s much more to come.
