Star Wars fans are thrilled to know that Star Wars: Rebels likely won’t be the last time we see Sabine Wren. Star Wars: Ahsoka is expected to be the first time we see Sabine in live-action, which has raised many questions about the role the Mandalorian will play in the larger Star Wars story moving forward.
Sabine was a key component of Rebels, and the way her story ended in the show has always implied she would appear in some form or another in Star Wars again someday. But now that the darksaber has come back into the game, is it possible fans could see her holding the sword once again?
In Star Wars: Rebels, Sabine stumbled upon the darksaber on Dathomir and reluctantly agreed to allow Kanan to train her to use it. Holding the darksaber meant she had the chance – and the influence – to convince her family to break away from the Empire and reclaim their home planet of Mandalore, which was then under Imperial control.
After hitting the Empire hard on Mandalore, Sabine gave the darksaber to Bo-Katan Kryze with the understanding that she would do everything she could to reunite the Mandalorian clans and restore their home. At some point between then and when we see Bo again in The Mandalorian, she lost the saber to Moff Gideon. By the end of Mandalorian Season 2, Din Djarin holds the saber, having won it in combat from Gideon.
There have been many questions about whether or not Din will keep the saber, since he appears to want nothing to do with it and has already tried at least once to give it back to Bo. Now that Sabine is expected to appear in the Ahsoka series, however, could she eventually be the one to reclaim the sword and rule Mandalore once and for all?
Since she willingly gave Bo the saber in Rebels, it seems like she might be done with the weapon and the history it brings with it. By the end of the show, her priorities seemed to lie more toward her friends and the cause they all stood for.
However, The Mandalorian has thus far shown that Bo-Katan is on a ruthless quest to win control of Mandalore back from the Empire once more … and her methods at times have been questionable at best. It’s possible that Sabine could see what she’s doing, step in, and reclaim the saber for herself for the good of her people and home.
Since we don’t know the story the Ahsoka series plans to tell, it’s hard to predict how a crossover between the current live-action shows could play out. But if a major Star Wars Disney+ crossover is in fact part of Lucasfilm’s long-term plan, reuniting Sabine with the darksaber could be part of the narrative.
What happens after that? We’ll just have to wait (and wait … and wait …) to find out.
Star Wars: Ahsoka is set to release on Disney+ sometime in the next few years.
